Who it’s for

One app for every day-count rule you’re juggling.

If where you spend your days decides where you owe tax, guessing is expensive. Tax Residency Tracker keeps an accurate, provable count so you cross the right lines on purpose.

  • Digital nomads

Bounce between countries without accidentally triggering residency in one of them.

  • Expats

Prove non-residence in your old country and residence in your new one, day by day.

  • Frequent travellers

Stay under Schengen 90/180 and every visa-free limit without spreadsheet maths.

  • Remote workers

Split time across US states and keep statutory-residency days below the line.

  • Accountants’ clients

Hand your advisor a clean, dated CSV with proof documents - not a shoebox of receipts.

  • Retirees & snowbirds

Move between two homes each year and keep each residency count exactly where you want it.

How it works

From landing at the airport to a filed report.

Turn it on once. The app watches your location, counts every day the right way, warns you before a threshold, and hands your accountant a clean export.

Turn on automatic tracking.

Enable location and the app detects border and state crossings in the background - even when it’s closed - and creates a dated stay for you. Prefer to do it by hand? Add, edit and delete stays with country, dates, transport and notes.

  • Automatic GPS border-crossing detection
  • Background monitoring, even when the app is closed
  • Manual stays whenever you want full control

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The rules people get wrong most often - and where to read more.

How does the 183-day rule work?

Most countries treat you as a tax resident once you spend 183 days or more there in a tax year - and any part of a day usually counts as a full day. Some use a rolling 12-month window rather than a calendar year, and a few add ties like a home or family. Tax Residency Tracker counts every day per country automatically and shows how close you are to each 183-day line.

How is the Schengen 90/180-day rule calculated?

The Schengen rule is not a calendar limit - it is a rolling 180-day window. On any given day you may not have spent more than 90 days inside the Schengen Area in the previous 180. The app runs the official rolling-window calculation continuously and warns you before you approach 90 days.

What is the US Substantial Presence Test?

The IRS Substantial Presence Test decides US tax residency using a weighted 3-year count: all of the current year’s US days, one-third of last year’s, and one-sixth of the year before. Reach 183 weighted days (with at least 31 in the current year) and you are generally a US tax resident. The app computes the weighted total for you.

See the Substantial Presence Test guide
How do I count days for US state residency, like California or New York?

Many US states apply a 183-day statutory-residency test alongside a permanent home (abode). New York, for example, makes you a statutory resident at 184 days with an abode, and any part of a day generally counts. Tax Residency Tracker tracks your days by US state in parallel with countries, with per-state thresholds.

Track state residency days
How many days can I spend in the UK before becoming tax resident?

The UK uses the Statutory Residence Test, not a flat 183 days. Depending on your ties and recent history the threshold can be as low as 16 or 46 days, and you count days where you are in the UK at midnight. The app records each UK day so you always know where you stand against the SRT.

Read the UK residence test guide
Which day-counting method should I use?

Different rules count days differently: the midnight rule (where you sleep), the calendar-day rule (any part of a day counts), a full 24-hour day, or an overnight stay. Getting the method wrong can shift your total by weeks. The app lets you pick the counting mode that matches the rule you care about.

How do I prove my days if I get a residency audit?

In a residency audit the burden of proof is on you, and undocumented days are often counted against you. Tax Residency Tracker keeps a dated location history and lets you attach boarding passes, receipts and documents to each stay, then export a clean CSV with attachments for your accountant.

Prepare for a residency audit
Is it free, and what does a subscription add?

Tax Residency Tracker is free to download and includes manual and automatic day tracking, the residency threshold dashboard, and alerts. A subscription (Weekly, Monthly, or Lifetime, processed by Apple) unlocks the day-counting modes and the CSV data export. See the Subscription Services terms below for exact pricing and renewal details.

Read the subscription terms
Is my location data private?

Yes. Everything is processed and stored locally on your device - your stays, location history and documents are never sent to our servers or shared with anyone. Optional iCloud sync keeps data inside your own private iCloud account. You can turn location off any time.
